Cupertino Electric Gives Construction-Focused College Students Real-World Experience Via Mentorship, Sponsorship

National ASC Competition Tests Students with Intense Scenarios Derived from Actual Projects

SPARKS, Nev. — Engineering and construction leader Cupertino Electric Inc. today announced continued sponsorship of the 2015 Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Student Competition, a national event attended by students seeking real-world experience to prepare them for a career in construction and engineering. In its 28th year, the competition is held February 4 through 7, 2015 in Sparks, Nevada, and draws more than 1,000 students from across the United States.

While at ASC, students unite their estimating and scheduling knowledge with communication skills and teamwork during a mock scenario based on a typical day-in-the-life of a problem project after a bid has been submitted. As the founding sponsor of the competition’s electrical problem, Cupertino Electric created a custom scenario to introduce students to the varied challenges that a project team faces during a complex construction project.

“This year’s electrical problem has roughly a 30 percent increase in participation,” said Mike Garner, president of sales for Cupertino Electric. “It is extremely gratifying to see students test their limits in a supportive, but realistic, scenario and come away from the experience with more job knowledge, more self-confidence and more information about the construction industry.”

About the Associated Students of Construction Competition

Any student of an ASC-affiliated school is eligible to participate in the 2015 competition. The student teams participating in the 2015 electrical problem represent Auburn University; California State University, Chico; California Polytechnic State University, Pomona; California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; California State University, Sacramento; Colorado State University; Oregon State University; and Purdue University.

During the two-day competition, student teams are judged on project planning, design and presentation skills by industry experts. The top three teams are recognized and given money for their school’s ASC program. One individual student also receives the “Most Valuable Participant” award by Cupertino Electric for demonstrating the drive, commitment and passion for electrical contracting.
